Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive Annual Report: April 2024 to March 2025

Share the page

The Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (DRHI) scheme was introduced in 2014 as a government financial incentive to promote the use of low-carbon heating technologies and encourage the decarbonisation of UK domestic heating.

Under the DRHI scheme, eligible households in England, Scotland, and Wales that installed air source or ground source heat pumps, biomass boilers, or solar thermal systems could apply to receive quarterly payments over 7 years for the low-carbon heat their systems were expected to produce. The DRHI closed to new applicants on 31 March 2022.

The report provides information on the installations accredited under the scheme, the low-carbon heat produced, and payments made to participants. It also provides an overview of our activity to monitor compliance, which helps to ensure only those eligible receive support under the scheme.

Highlights

  • Around 10,122 GWh of heat has been generated by the 117,424 accredited installations since the start of the scheme in 2014, with 763 GWh being generated in Scheme Year 11.
  • 78,553 fossil fuelled boilers have been replaced by lower carbon alternatives under the scheme, highlighting the DRHI’s contribution to building a cleaner energy system in the UK.
  • In total support payments of more than £1.2 billion have been made, with £106.2 million of this being made in Scheme Year 11.
  • Through our monitoring and compliance activities in Scheme Year 11, we prevented £578,530 from being paid out incorrectly. We also identified £591,609 for recovery, of which almost 90% has already been recovered.
